Why Renewing the Child Tax Credit Should Be a National Priority

In 2021, the U.S expanded the Child Tax Credit (CTC), which is a program that gives money to low income families with children to help cover the costs of raising them, causing the child poverty levels to drop almost by a half. Families received monthly checks that assisted them in basic needs like groceries, rent, gas, school supplies, and childcare. It wasn’t a complicated program as it simply gave parents who needed it a little extra support.

However, at the end of 2021, Congress allowed the CTC expansion to expire which caused millions of families to lose that monthly help. Consequently, child poverty went back up and many parents started struggling again. The majority were not able to afford food, bills, and other vital necessities. As many often think the program failed, it actually ended because lawmakers couldn’t find a middle ground, even though it helped millions of children.

Renewing the CTC matters not only because it supports the kids directly but it also gives them more opportunities in the future to grow. When low income parents receive extra help, they are able to keep their homes more stable and put healthy food on the table. All these small differences can make a huge impact on the child’s growth and development in school. Additionally, research even shows how investing in children now leads to better health, higher earnings, and stronger communities in the future.

The CTC worked as it lifted families, reduced suffering, and gave millions of children a gateway to a more fair start. Renewing this policy isn’t just a smart move, it will make our future brighter.
